The announcement from PROSTAID Calgary is part of the organization’s ongoing commitment to providing resources for cancer warriors and survivors, including community connections, medical updates, and scientific information.
A recent report published in the European Journal of Cancer Care shows that peer support groups can provide a number of benefits for cancer survivors or those in the process of battling the disease, as such meetings help create realistic expectations for treatment, develop healthy coping strategies, and share information. The PROSTAID Calgary support groups are open to anyone, without any fees attached, and are intended to be a place for encouragement and sharing. “Our monthly meetings feature prominent health specialists and include an opportunity to catch up with old friends or make new connections,” explains a spokesperson. “Our aim is to assist and support patients, families, and friends by informing, empathizing with and reassuring men on their journey with prostate cancer.”
The peer-to-peer general meetings include an open forum for attendees to share their own experiences with cancer as part of a group mission to lift spirits and strengthen collective resolve to fight for a high quality of life and a cure.
Overall objectives at PROSTAID Calgary include mutual support for men and their families, an increased public awareness and understanding of prostate cancer, and ongoing advocacy efforts towards a strong provincial voice in matters relating to the disease.
While the meetings feature presentations from recognized specialists, including researchers, physicians, oncologists, and academics, the organization notes that the information at meetings is not intended to be taken as medical advice.
The upcoming January general meeting at PROSTAID Calgary will take place on January 17, 2024 and features a presentation on new developments in prostate cancer radiotherapy from Dr. Harvey Quon, a Radiation Oncologist and Clinical Associate Professor at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and University of Calgary.
